Things are certainly changing in the South End. Eater Boston is reporting that “after nearly nine decades in business, the South End’s classic breakfast spot, Charlie’s Sandwich Shoppe, will close this summer.” Quite a blow for the community of sandwich lovers and fans of the iconic sandwich shop.
A statement released to Eater Boston confirmed that “Charlie’s Sandwich Shoppe will be closing at the end of June.” It continued, “We would like to thank all of our friends, family, and customers for 87 years of great memories.”
After 87 years, Charlie’s Sandwich Shoppe will be closing at June’s end. Thank you for the best years of my life. @TurkeyHash @cuddyboston

The closing of Charlie’s Sandwich Shoppe, a true Boston institution, has been met with shock and sadness. If you don’t believe me, just look at these distraught tweets from fellow sandwich shoppe fans.

Over the years, numerous celebrities have paid a visit to the diner-like restaurant including President Obama, Sammy Davis, Jr. and Julia Child. And who could blame them? The shop’s wildly famous greasy turkey hash will live on in our minds forever.
In the meantime, we recommend getting your turkey hash fix at Charlie’s before it closes for good this summer.
BostInno reached out to Charlie’s Sandwich Shoppe for comment and will update the story as we learn more.
