The month of April has some serious perks. It’s the start of baseball season, the end of winter, and in case you didn’t know, it also happens to be National Grilled Cheese Month. Oftentimes, arbitrary days and months assigned to random foods don’t really mean anything, even if they’re “national.” Last Tuesday was National Peanut Butter and Jelly Day, and all I did to celebrate was make fake plans with my friends to gorge on Goober while watching Dance Moms. But this April, Cheeseboy is celebrating National Grilled Cheese Month — hard. And by that I mean they’re giving away 10,000 free grilled cheese sandwiches.

But, calm down, there’s a catch. In order to be the lucky recipient of free, cheesy, toasty goodness, you have to do something nice for someone. *Groan.* Cheeseboy is rewarding 10,000 Acts of Kindness with free sandwich vouchers–all you have to do is get caught being the opposite of an asshole. Hold the door open for a stranger, pick up some litter and toss it in the trash, help an elderly woman cross the street (has anyone ever actually done this?), and you could have a free grilled cheese sandwich coming your way.

You may be wondering how your random act of kindness will be discovered by a Cheeseboy employee; this isn’t The Truman Show, after all. (OMG, or is it?) Yes, if a Cheeseboy worker spots you returning a dropped $20 bill to someone on the sidewalk, or giving change to the homeless, you could earn yourself a sandwich, but there are other ways to go about it (basically, don’t all crowd outside of Cheeseboy and attempt to one-up your neighbor’s nice deed).

You can also be referred by a fellow Cheeseboy customer who spotted you in the act, or you can share you kind stories on Cheeseboy’s Facebook and Twitter pages, and the company just might reward you. Plus, they’re giving good-doers not one, but two vouchers for a free sandwich, so that they can pay it forward and reward fellow good-doers, and definitely not keep it for themselves for later.

Cheeseboy has also been surprising groups and individuals involved in volunteer events and programs throughout the Northeast who share the belief in generosity that founder Michael Inwald supports.

“We have been sincerely grateful for the generosity we’ve received from the communities in which Cheeseboy has been operating over the years, and we hope this is just one way we can return the kindness during National Grilled Cheese Month,” Inwald said in a statement.

So this month, suck it up and be nice to others. You should do that every other month, too, but sometimes daily struggles like riding the T during rush hour and walking down a crowded sidewalk get in the way. I understand. But there’s grilled cheese involved this time. Still, if you don’t think your odds of winning a sandwich are very good, you can head out to a Cheeseboy location near you on Free Grilled Cheese Day–Sunday, April 28th from 1 to 6 p.m–and receive a free classic grilled cheese, no purchase or kind deed necessary.

Cheeseboy operates at South Station and the Prudential Center, as well as other Boston-area locations
