My coworker just passed by the writers’ corner and exclaimed, “It’s like a garden over here!” And, honestly, it is. Roses abound in the Rue office on Valentine’s Day. Unfortunately, however, in four to seven days, sad, half-wilted petals will stand in their place. Sure, you could make potpourri – while knitting mittens for your bridge group. Or, you could do something far more fabulous: give yourself a facial. According to SELF magazine’s contributing blogger Alexandra Samuel, roses are “ridiculously” good for the skin. “They’ve got built-in toners to get you glowing.”

So, what’s Samuel’s suggestion for all those wilted leftovers? A rose-petal facial. Here’s how it works:

  1. Crush the petals of two roses using a mortar and pestle, or if you don’t have one, a bowl and a muddler.
  2. For dry skin: add a teaspoon of face oil and a teaspoon of honey for moisture. For oily skin: add two teaspoons of full-fat Greek yogurt with a teaspoon of honey.
  3. Use a paintbrush to apply the mask over skin and neck.
  4. After ten minutes, wipe off the mixture with a warm cloth.

The result: brighter, soothed skin that smells pretty good, too.

Now, for those of us still perusing dating apps and the local bar scene – i.e., spending a rose-free night in with a few friends and a bottle of tequila – never fear. Bouquets will abound tomorrow at half price.
