Last week we took at look at the salaries of Boston Mayor Marty Walsh and his administration in comparison to those of predecessor Tom Menino and his constituents. The information wasn’t particularly groundbreaking in that many of those in City Hall earn wages on par with those who came before them, including Mayor Walsh, whose $175,000 salary is the same as Boston’s 20-year Mayor Menino. But a new infographic compares what he’s earning to fellow municipal leaders nationwide.

WGBH compiled data from cities around the country, noting, however, that “each city government operates in a unique way” so it’s not an exact science when comparing the salary of one mayor to that of another. There are a number of variables that come into play such as city budgets, type of government and pure size.

So in order to measure salaries as accurately as possible, the local news publication figured out cities comparable to Boston in terms of population – Seattle, Denver and El Paso. Though it’s worth noting that only Seattle is closest to Boston when it comes to city square milage.

Here’s what they found:

It’s interesting to consider, too, that Boston, with the smallest area, has the most city employees by far (17,000) and second largest city budget, $2.7 billion – which is almost half of that of Seattle’s enormous $4.4 billion. Following suit, Mayor Marty Walsh earns less than Seattle Mayor Ed Murray. But all pale in comparison to what El Paso City Manager, who pulls down $238,960.

WGBH took the comparisons even further, stacking up the mayor’s annual pay to fellow civic leaders who also graduated from Mayor Walsh’s alma mater Boston College. What’s most striking in that regard is that Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings earns a respectable $60,000 yearly (less than half of Walsh’s) whereas City Manager A.C. Gonzalez takes home a staggering $400,000.
