This week we look at prescription sleep aid usage in the US, social media friendly hospitals, shapeshifting technology for smarter drugs, the state of patient-centricity and must-know healthcare tech terms for the next decade:

– Nearly 9 million US adults take prescription sleep aids, with use more common among those who are older, female, white and better educated, according to the first government survey of its kind. Prescription Sleep Aid Use Among Adults: United States, 2005–2010 from the CDC shares key findings from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey

– Most of the nation’s top hospitals are already doing an awesome job on their social media strategies, so the staff at MHAdegree.org decided to list the best of the best. After gathering social media stats for all of the hospitals listed as “Nationally Ranked” for at least one adult specialty by U.S. News & World Report and using the number of followers and the amount of activity on each platform to calculate a score, they compiled the Top 50 Most Social Media Friendly Hospitals for 2013

– FierceHealthIT reports scientists have invented computer technology that identifies “smarter drugs” to treat illnesses. Shapeshifting Technology for Smarter Drugs explains the Shapeshifting Inspired Discovery (SID) decodes protein structures in cells that scientists believe could lead to new treatments with the ability to rapidly tell how the proteins could be “shapeshifted” by drugs. Shapeshifting involves a subtle, different mechanism than regular drugs – it doesn’t completely stop proteins from working

Patient-centricity is gaining traction in pharma and companies are working overtime to implement this into planning and strategy. Eyeforpharma’s Brands Cannot be Patient-Centric Simply by Adopting the Catchphrase discusses what it means to be patient centric and how close are we as an industry to being truly patient-centric

– MedCity News reached out to futurists and drew from past conversations with industry leaders to compile a list of the next generation of disruptive technologies that are on the brink of breaking through in healthcare to bring us A Healthcare Innovator’s Guide to Must-Know Tech Terms For The Next Decade of Medicine
