Legitimate good news has been hard to find for companies like DraftKings and FanDuel as the previously surging NFL contests slowly declined in participation. Still, as football’s regular season winds down, good news could be arriving in the form of the NBA.

According to daily fantasy analytics site Super Lobby, the numbers for NBA contests have gone up. From December 2-8, here are the entry totals (with prizes paid in parenthesis):

FanDuel: $22,088,775 ($19,768,985)*

DraftKings: $13,308,886 ($12,086,246)

This represents an increase for DraftKings from the previous week of nearly 11 percent ($13.3million vs. $12 million).

And it contrasts with numbers from DraftKings’ NFL contests. Since collecting entry fees of more than $25 million in a single week in October, the NFL grand prize pools have shrunk to just over $18.5 million last week (according to Super Lobby). But with the NBA, DraftKings may have found a short term fix while it awaits further legal clarity.

It’s showcases the growing strength of the NBA daily fantasy market, which couldn’t come at a better time. The strong effort made by DraftKings over the last year to diversify is paying off. Instead of simply relying solely on the NFL, daily fantasy is branching out.
