Mayoral candidate and Suffolk County District Attorney Dan Conley called on New York City’s mayoral candidates, Tuesday, asking for their continued support for an advocacy group created by incumbent mayor’s Thomas Menino and Michael Bloomberg.

Conley, in a letter sent to New York City’s candidates, addressed speculation that Mayors Against Illegal Guns “might lose its direction or effectiveness,” once the incumbents are out of office.

Conley believes the only way for the advocacy group to remain strong is for cities like Boston and New York to lead the way in the fight to keep guns out of the hands of criminals, off the streets, and out of schools.

Conley touted a special Gun Court developed by his office, which, he says, has expedited prosecutions of firearm cases, while increasing the conviction rate to 90 percent. Conley also took time address his support for “cutting-edge legislation” focusing on illegal handguns.

The mayoral candidate said that this legislation “underscores why Mayors Against Illegal Guns must continue on.”

Conley’s letter, which was released by his campaign Tuesday, addressed the notion that efforts at “common sense” gun control have been undermined by less stringent gun laws in neighboring states.

Mayors Against Illegal Guns is scheduled to come to Boston on Wednesday. The rally is a part of its “No More Name’s” tour, designed to commemorate victims of gun violence. The tour  is also urging Congress to pass new gun safety legislation. The event will be held at 11 a.m. in Faneuil Hall.
