Daily deal sites that offer deep discounts in specific cities have gone mainstream, with many even offering their own branded apps to touch customers at even more points during the day. And to an extent, so have location based coupon apps that feature discounts at merchants and venues around you – even putting popular check-in apps like Foursquare, SCVNGR and Facebook Places aside.

We took a look at a dozen non check-in centric apps out there for accessing deals in your area to help you sort through the noise. We broke the apps down into three different categories: location-based daily deal apps, location-based  coupon apps, and apps that aggregate or combine both aspects.

Daily Deal Apps

DealsGoRound: DealsGoRound is a marketplace for re-selling past daily deals on sites like BuyWithMe and Groupon, allowing you to do second-hand deal shopping. Sellers are cross checked with their PayPal accounts and guarantees refunds on fraudulent second-hand deals as security measures, but I personally haven’t given it a try. iPhone (no Android yet)

Gilt City: The Gilt City app offers city-specific daily deals in several cities. iPhone (no Android yet)

Groupon: The Groupon apps serves up the daily Groupon in your city, and keeps track of those expired, used, and ready to use. You can use this app to show your Groupon when you’re at a local business redeeming it. Android | iPhone

LevelUp by SCVNGR: Just launched in Boston and Philadelphia, this app provides a new twist on daily deals. Instead of just one deal, you can “level up” and unlock two more follow up deals at even steeper discounts. If you share a deal you bought to your social networks or over email and someone clicks on it and purchases the deal too, you receive a credit to your LevelUp account for spreading the word and bringing in that sale. LevelUp is targeting small businesses initially, and we’d recommend you give it a try. Android | iPhone

LivingSocial: The LivingSocial app offers several daily deals in your city every day as well as daily “escape” deals on travel packages. You can use this app to show your purchase when you’re at a local business redeeming it. Android | iPhone

Rue City, Rue La La’s city-specific site, and BuyWithMe do not offer branded mobile apps.

Coupon Apps

I AM HUNGRY by Zaang Inc.: I AM HUNGRY apps offers up coupons sourced though a sales team which builds relationships with local restaurants in particular. Their app features coupons and deals at restaurants, redeemable by barcode or showing the cashier, based on your location. Currently the app is available in Boston only, but plans to move to other cities soon. Android | iPhone

Peekaboo Mobile by Byte Ventures: Peekaboo builds relationships with Boston merchants, moving neighborhood to neighborhood. Their app features coupons, redeemable by barcode or showing the cashier, at some great local favorites. They have also partnered with other feature-rich apps, for example, they power a portion of the WHERE app’s deals section. The company is currently evaluating releasing an app for Las Vegas, which could offer a great new market and the opportunity to cater to travelers, too.  Android | iPhone

ShopKick by Cross-Platform Corp.: ShopKick offers rewards and deals through game play if you’re willing to rack up rewards by playing over time to get great deals.  You earn “kickbucks” within the app for actions like checking-in to a store, scanning in-store barcodes at ShopKick partner merchants like Target, or sharing you are a fan of stores. After earning enough kickbucks, you can cash them in for giftcards to some of your favorite places like BestBuy, American Eagle, Sports Authority, and even for Facebook Credits (the app developers boast you can earn your first giftcard reward in 3 days time). Android | iPhone

YPmobile: YP is yellowpages.com’s local discovery app, offering nearby coupon deals as one of its main features. The app’s deals section allows you to search by category, and features a decent amount of businesses. The one red flag on this app is that the bottom of each coupon reads, “Please call first to confirm the business will accept this coupon. Not all businesses accept mobile coupons.” If you’re in Boston, I would go with WHERE instead or if you’re looking for a straight-up coupon app, Peekaboo. Android | iPhone

Apps with Daily Deals + Coupons

Deals by CitySearch: This app finds deals around you based on your location, and also includes the Groupon daily deals that boast even deeper discounts. Deals by CitySearch pulls deals around you from a few deal aggregators and media companies (in Boston: mainly, CityGrid Media and DealMap). Android | iPhone

Daily Deals by EPage, Inc.: This app searches various e-commerce sites to aggregate deals and includes daily deals by LivingSocial and Groupon based on your location Unfortunately, you can only browse by merchant and really only the big merchants like Amazon, Buy.com, WalMart and TigerDirect are represented. We wouldn’t recommend downloading this app. Android | iPhone

WHERE: WHERE is a local discovery app with features includes a section called “Coupons” dedicated to exclusive deals from local businesses based on your location. They aggregate deals from sources like Peekaboo Mobile and Yowza, and also include in-app ads that often feature deals at local businesses as well. The company hasn’t yet released the daily deal aspect of its app, but has been working to release it later this year (maybe even soon), so be on the lookout. Android | iPhone
