In an attempt to curb gambling by banning all Internet cafes, Florida lawmakers effectively outlawed every computer and smartphone in the state. Florida recently voted to ban Internet cafes, but they worded the bill so poorly that they banned any “system or network of devices that may be used in a game of chance” – so basically any device that connects to the internet, oops. According to The Huffington Post, Florida Governor Rick Scott approved a ban on slot machines and Internet cafes in April following an incident in which a charity tied to Lt. Governor Jennifer Carroll (who was forced to resign after the episode) was shut down for suspected Internet gambling.

Basically, 1,000 Florida Internet cafes were shut down immediately, including Miami-Dade’s Incredible Investments, LLC. The disgruntled owner of the cafe that used to provide online services to immigrant workers, Consuelo Zapata, decided to sue the state. Her legal team discovered that the ban was hastily worded “”in a frenzy fueled by distorted judgment in the wake of a scandal that included the Lieutenant Governor’s resignation” and thus, is unconstitutional.

The wording is so broad that it applies to any device connected to the internet. As you can see, that would include computers and smartphones. But if the suit fails and the ban on pretty much any device remains in place, it won’t be all bad. At least for those of us not in Florida – it should be pretty funny to see people being cuffed with their iPhones in hand.
