Donald Trump made an appearance on the Late Show with David Letterman last night, perhaps to shed a bit of insight into his strange, blackmail-esque offer to President Obama. On Wednesday The Donald took to his Facebook and Twitter feeds to make a “game-changing announcement” that would alter the presidential race. After two days of hype and anticipation, Trump told America that he would donate $5 million to the president’s favorite charity in exchange for the president releasing his college applications, transcripts, and other records that really have no relevance to his presidency whatsoever.

Watch Donald Trump On Late Show with David Letterman:

The big question is why? Trumps response, “Transparency” about which he asked the audience “Does that make sense to anybody?” who responded with some half-hearted cheers.

Previous to appearing on Letterman’s show, Trump stopped by the set of Piers Morgan Tonight and told Morgan and the studio audience that he had received “tremendous praise for the most part.” It doesn’t look like Trump’s gone back to Twitter since he dropped the dud announcement. If he did, he wouldn’t find praise. In fact, he’s been mocked mercilessly.

Trump upped the ante last night too, saying that he’d raise the $5 million and that he hopes the president’s records are nearly perfect.

Letterman had a good time with Trump though, telling the real estate mogul “My God Don, if you took a look at my college records, and for the love of God don’t show them to CBS, they’d take this show away from me so quick my head would spin. I barely graduated.”

Maybe it’s just the cynic in me, but I’ve got to wonder what Trump’s ulterior motive is here. Why is it such a big deal that Obama hasn’t released his college records when he isn’t even obligated to do so? George Washington, Andrew Jackson, Martin Van Buren, Zachary Taylor, Millard Fillmore, Abraham Lincoln, Andrew Johnson, Grover Cleveland, and Harry Truman didn’t even attend college and most of them did just fine. Even a very recent president (can you guess who??) was surrounded by accusations of cocaine use and participating in college cheerleading.

Do you think Trump is in the right here? Does President Obama really need to release his records?
