The above video was the view from Scholars in Boston as Dallas was defeated in overtime by Washington on Monday Night Football. In the middle of the sea of excited New Hampshire residents emerges (eventually) Michael Leavitt, who was undoubtedly the happiest of them all (he’s the one who they put on their shoulders). Thanks to Dez Bryant “underachieving” (at least by Bryant’s own monumental standards), Leavitt became the first New Englander to win DraftKings Millionaire Maker challenge. So yes, in the moment caputred in the video, you see Leavitt become a millionaire.

It’s was an extraordinary occasion, probably only topped by Leavitt’s circumstances. From Atkinson, New Hampshire, the popular manager of a car dealership initially put together a straightforward, albeit forgettable DraftKings team before Sunday’s games kicked off. Then, in a last second flash of inspiration, he decided to make another team.

“I took Brady, LaFell and Gronk,” Leavitt told BostInno after it was all over, somehow still able to summon a moment of calmness amidst the pandemonium. “I sat down at my desk at work, 12:45 p.m. on Sunday afternoon. I just had a feeling, I don’t know. I plugged the rest in, I just did it.”

Taking a bet on the local starts (who are his favorite team, clearly), Leavitt rode the Patriots to victory, since all of the ones that he took had amazingly productive days in New England’s 51-23 shellacking of the Bears. Here’s his team:

Asked to describe how he felt (an admittedly impossible task), Leavitt was adamant.

“Absolutely amazing,” he said. “I have an 8-month old son, a beautiful fiancee, a beautiful family. I’m already blessed as it is. It’s unbelievable, it’s really unbelievable.”

Going into Monday Night Football, Leavitt was up 24 points on his closest rival, who had Dez Bryant still to play. Bryant, the prolific Cowboys receiver, had a touchdown catch in the first half, but was limited in his receptions and yards, which was crucial. Still, the second half (and eventual overtime) was nerve-wracking, to say the least. And Leavitt actually doubted his chances.

“It was either way,” Leavitt noted. “It was a toss-up, but I knew I had the points, but I sort of thought I was going to lose, to be honest with you. Romo went out, Weeden came in. Weeden’s not a very good quarterback. Romo came back in, who the hell knows what was going to happen? Washington played well, and that’s really what the difference was, I think.”

Washington emerged victorious in the game, and (as seen in the video) Romo’s failure on an overtime fourth down sealed it. Cue the craziness. Leavitt, despite his doubts, was buoyed up by a phalanx of friends and family who packed Scholars to support him.

“Best friends since like first grade, everybody’s here, all my family and friends.”

He posed for (roughly) a million pictures with the giant DraftKings check (which was just for show until he gets the real thing), and will serve as an example to future participants that just because they play a hunch, or only go with one or two entries, they can also win the million.
