Boston-based DraftKings has been battling hard to preserve its legality in several states, ranging from Massachusetts to California (with many places in between). A new development was supposed to be the addition of the United Kingdom by the end of 2015. However, it appears now that there will be a delay in the addition of international customers, with early 2016 now seen as the target launch date.

According to Bloomberg’s Eben Novy-Williams, DraftKings is holding off on the long expected U.K. launch until “early next year” (per a spokesperson). No specific reason was given for the holdup. Update: DraftKings made a statement regarding the delay:

Our fans and focus groups have provided us with very constructive feedback on our UK product and like us, are very excited about the launch of DraftKings. However, we think we can do better and are continuing to make refinements prior to a full launch. Once these minor issues are resolved we will be ready to go live — there is nothing else standing in our way.

The expansion was first revealed in August, when the daily fantasy company was granted a gaming license (which is required for operation in the U.K).

At the time, DraftKings CEO Jason Robins said that it was a “milestone moment in the growth of DraftKings as we introduce our world-class product to new audiences.” And he added that DraftKings would be adding new games and contests to accommodate the U.K. audience.

Of course, all of that still appears to be on track, just not in 2015.

FanDuel, meanwhile, is currently attempting to secure its own gaming license in the U.K. And while DraftKings’ main competitor is actually an ally in many of the current legal battles over the status of daily fantasy, the two industry leaders are still in direct opposition to each other. In that respect, DraftKings is firmly positioned to have a leg up on as many as 1.5 million new customers.
