After today, America really will be running on Dunkin’.

Earlier this year, Dunkin’ Donuts announced plans to expand beyond its current East Coast locations – and into the great unknown, Starbucks-laden territory of California. A release in June revealed that Dunkin’ had filed for permits to open its first California locations in Downey, Long Beach, Modesto, Santa Monica and Whittier. Although, as ocregister.com notes, there are three Dunkin’ venues already “in San Diego, Camp Pendleton and Barstow.”However, “those stores are considered nontraditional, opening inside a hotel, a tourist center and a military base,” reports the article.

The new California Dunkin’ Donuts will be a “full expression” store, notes ocregister.com.

The Boston Globe is reporting that the first Dunkin’ Donuts California location opens today in Modesto – in the midst of serious Starbucks competition, of course.

The California market is currently dominated by Starbucks, which “has more than 2,500 stores” in the state, reports the Boston Globe. But while Starbucks caters to the higher end of the socioeconomic spectrum, Dunkin’ is targeting “middle-to-lower-income consumers who represent a larger percentage of the workforce,” notes the Boston Globe.

The article also reports that last year, Dunkin’ was the “second-largest coffee chain in the United States with $6.7 billion in annual sales and a 30.9 percent market share,” while Starbucks led the way with $11.7 billion in sales and a 53.8 percent share.

Dunkin’ Donuts also announced in a release earlier this summer their plans to develop 54 new restaurants throughout Southern California in the coming years.

But this isn’t Dunkin’ Donuts first major expansion. Last year the coffee shop opened a UK Dunkin’ Donuts location on December 17, 2013. And now that its popping up across the country – and the world – it won’t be long until you can find a piece of home in every corner of the globe (we hope!).
