On Saturday, the Environmental League of Massachusetts will throw down in sustainable style to help raise money for their environment efforts and spread their message. Taking place at the Back Bay Events Center on Saturday night, the event aptly dubbed Earth Night will also be graced with the presence of Gina McCarthy, Administration for the Environmental Protection Agency, whose passion for the environment, we’re told, runs just as deep as her passion for our Boston Red Sox. Fitting for today’s home opener.

Billed as an annual fundraiser and networking event, the ELM’s shindig is equal parts business and pleasure. BostInno spoke with ELM President George Bachrach about the event, who described it to us as one where “People like each other; They care about our mission, they eat and they drink, and they have fun.”

Along with good company, there will be music and food, as well as silent and live auctions. Some of the spoils of the auctions include Red Sox tickets; autographed Sox, Bruins and Celtics swag; and a trip to Belize.

Women of the World, an international ensemble of musicians representing 9 countries and 21 different languages, will be setting the tone and dropping beats.

But the real prize will be Gina McCarthy, though, who Bachrach tells us is “a real force in D.C,” adding “She’s from Boston,” as if that gives her some kind of extra swagger. Let’s get real for a second; it definitely does.

Before being appointed by President Obama to her current role, McCarthy served as the Commissioner of the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection. Over her 30-year career, she’s advocated for environmental protection, clean energy and green technology changes at the local, state and now federal levels.

With the help of McCarthy, Bachrach hopes to bolster the ELM’s clout in making positive changes to the environment that we can all enjoy in some capacity.

“We’re trying to elevate issues of climate change and environmental protection on the agenda’s of government and to the community at large,” Bachrach continued. “We’re trying hard to put more muscle into this and to push people to take action before the next Superstorm Sandy hits the east coast.”

The Environmental League has already made imprints on both the recent Mayoral election and on the gubernatorial race, the election of which will take place in November, by bringing environmental and climatic issues to the front lines of Bay State politics.
