An East Boston-only vote for the proposed Suffolk Downs casino has been approved by the City Council by a 12-1 vote, Boston.com reports.

City Councilor John Connolly was in attendance and supported an East Boston-only vote. Connolly’s mayoral opponent, Marty Walsh, is also a strong supporter of the referendum.

Dan Conley and Bill Walczak were the most adamant  supporters of a citywide casino vote during their mayoral campaigns.

By state law, East Boston would cast the only votes regarding a proposed Suffolk Downs casino, Wesley Lowery reports. That would change only if the city council and Mayor Tom Menino “intervened.”

It was determined, however, that East Boston residents would be affected the most by a casino and, therefore, they should be the only ones to vote, Boston.com reports.

Suffolk Downs approved the council’s decision.

Chip Tuttle, Suffolk Downs COO, told the Boston Globe that today’s vote was “indicative” of the attitudes felt by Bostonians, referencing the poor performances of anti-casino candidates in yesterday’s preliminary election.

Councilor Matt O’Malley voted against the East Boston-only referendum Wednesday.

O’Malley proposed a “hybrid” option, but it was not deemed legal by the council. O’Malley then put forth a motion for a citywide vote.

CBS Boston reports that O’Malley’s motion was shutdown 10-3. Charles Yancey, Tito Jackson and O’Malley cast the only votes in favor of a citywide vote.

The East Boston-only vote is scheduled for Nov. 5. A NECN broadcast noted that Revere still has to approve the vote.
