Confession: We’re obsessed with chocolate (who could say no to a little Lindt Excellence?). And we’re not alone. According to NBC News, the average American consumes 12 pounds of chocolate per year – which isn’t exactly a bad thing. A recent study found that those who eat chocolate on the regular have lower BMIs. And the heath benefits don’t stop there. Here, check out some of the surprising ways chocolate is good for you.

  1. The smell of chocolate increases theta brain waves. Translation? With just a whiff, chocolate can trigger relaxation.
  2. Dark chocolate is full of antioxidants that rid your body of free radicals, which are destructive molecules associated with heart disease. In fact, eating dark chocolate every day reduces the risk of heart disease by one-third.
  3. Contrary to popular belief, chocolate does not rot your teeth. It actually has an antibacterial effect on your mouth, which helps prevent tooth decay.
  4. Chocolate contains serotonin, which can improve your mood and curb anxiety and depression.
  5. Flavanoids found in dark chocolate offer your skin protection from the sun’s harsh UV rays. (But that doesn’t mean you can substitute it for sunscreen.)
