While location based check-ins are no where near mainstream yet, we have been noticing quite a few more check-ins in our Facebook feeds this Spring — even by those who balked a year ago at the idea of sharing their whereabouts with their networks. We were curious which places were most popular on Facebook Places in Boston, and after some scrounging, below you will find the top 20 most checked into places.

As you would guess, tourist destinations, transit hubs, sports/concert venues, and Boston’s flagship universities filled the list. Other notable locations: Union Oyster House was the only restaurant on the list (Sam Adams Brewery, too, if you consider it such) and malls — both CambridgeSide and South Shore Plaza made the top 20.

Facebook and its 700 million users worldwide has the upper hand in user numbers and thus checkins compared to Foursquare, which launched in 2009 and arguably invented the concept. We included Foursquare check-in numbers to date at these locations as well for a comparison. And although Facebook Places usage is still too nascent to take away any real meaningful analysis, we also went ahead and calculated the ratio of number of checkins to the number of people who “like” that respective Facebook Place page. Without further ado:
