If you check out your Facebook newsfeed, you’ll probably notice the new #hashtag feature that links up hashtagged items to create and share trends. Interestingly by Zuck and the boys, though, is that just after the new feature was implemented, Facebook sent out mysterious invitations for a new product launch.

In plain Facebook fashion, the invites read “A small team has been working on a big idea. Join us for coffee and learn about a new product.” The invites come after Facebook not only released hashtags but also after it recently launched an HTC smartphone with little success. It was so unsuccessful in fact, that AT&T lowered the handset’s price from $99.99 to $0.99 on a two-year contract.

Founder Mark Zuckerberg recently discussed strategy during Facebook’s first annual shareholders meeting with many investors wondering how exactly the largest social media site in the world was planning to generate more revenue. After all, stock prices haven’t been close to its initial public offering price of $38 a share.

Adding to the intrigue was Greg Lindley’s Facebook blog post earlier this week which hinted at something not so far off on the horizon. Not until the last paragraph did he note, “We’ll continue to roll out more features in the coming weeks and months, including trending hashtags and deeper insights, that help people discover more of the world’s conversations.”

It’s important to note that Zuck and his Menlo Park-based company didn’t host any kind of event for the hashtag launch and only today was the board of directors announced so it is possible that these two aspects could play into the event.

According to ABC News, the invites were sent not by email but by regular post snail mail, something unusual for contemporary times.

But more than wondering what the event is about, we’re wondering why we haven’t received our invite yet. You went to Harvard, Zuck, so you should know where our Faneuil Hall office is.
