Though the U.S. women were far from sensational in their 3-1 World Cup opening win on Monday night, the buzz around the team is already undeniable. And a little closer to home, the Boston Breakers, who play in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL), created some buzz of their own, announcing a partnership with one of the city’s fastest growing sports startups.

Fancred, a sports social network founded in 2012, continues to branch out in its partnerships with professional teams. The Breakers are the latest, joining a list that also includes two NFL teams (Carolina and Washington).

“We’ve been focusing on our partnership program since January,” said Fancred’s Lauren Creedon. And the Breakers, she explained, were a natural fit, especially since they are in Fancred’s backyard.

“We think of the Breakers as just a very innovative, digitally savvy team.”

Notably, the connection between the two organizations began with an intern, who used the sports social media site.

“This actually all began last summer when one of our interns reached out to Fancred and said, hey, the Breakers should have a Fancred profile,” Ryan Wood, the communications manager of the Breakers, told BostInno.

From there, the partnership developed through mutual interest, as each side liked what it saw. That the new link was announced at the start of the Women’s World Cup just made sense.

The Breakers have two players currently in the World Cup. Boston’s goalkeeper, Alyssa Naeher, is backing up Hope Solo. And Bianca Sierra is playing as a defender for Mexico.

Wood was enthusiastic about the Breakers now being a partner with Fancred, who (as Creedon noted) have grown exponentially in the past year.

“We like to offer unique content throughout social media, and with Fancred, it gives us a tremendous opportunity to do just that,” Wood said. “We plan to offer our fans and crew behind the scenes photos and video on top of the latest news. We’re going to have some fun giveaways as well. We’re thrilled to be on Fancred.”

The site offers fans a chance to save their favorite sports memories in one place and share them with other like-minded fans. It’s a creative concept that works because of the wide array of passionate fans in U.S. sports. The Breakers will now have a perfect opportunity to capitalize on the inevitable popularity that their sport basks in during the month-long World Cup.

And now, they’ll be able to use Fancred to help with that.
