At roughly 1 p.m. Monday, students and workers throughout Boston walked out of their respective classrooms and offices in support of the Ferguson, Missouri #HandsUpWalkOut movement. Harvard University and Cambridge Rindge and Latin students blocked Harvard Square and Mass Ave during the protest, marching, chanting and staging a “die-in.”

Similar protests against police brutality and institutionalized racism occurred throughout the U.S. Monday, a week after a grand jury in Ferguson decided not to indict white police officer Darren Wilson for shooting and killing a black teenager, 18-year-old Michael Brown. In addition to being exactly one week after the Ferguson decision, Monday marked the 59th anniversary of Rosa Park’s arrest for her refusal to leave the white section of a bus.

The lack of indictment spurred protests in Ferguson and throughout the country, including a largely peaceful “Indict Boston” protest attended by more than 1,400 people. During the action on Tuesday night, protestors gathered outside the Boston Police Headquarters before moving to the South Bay House of Corrections, where prisoners showed solidarity through their cell windows. The group encountered some resistance, facing walls of police officers, and later attempted to block interstate highways.  During the course of the night, Boston police arrested 45 protesters.
