It’s back to school (well, back to fall anyway) which means, out with the old and in with the new. And that goes for your clothes as well. If you’re like me, you probably haven’t started cleaning out your closet yet, or boxing up those cute summer sundresses (le sigh). So long, short shorts and shoulder-revealing tank tops… I won’t, however, be sad to see my bathing suits all packed up and neatly placed in a sealed box.

And while you’re emptying your summer closet and replacing it with a fall-themed one, you may be tempted to throw your old fall clothes out the window. Well don’t. Make a more lucrative transition instead, by dry cleaning and sending them to your local consignment store. Because (almost) every article of clothing deserves a home, but that doesn’t mean it has to be yours. Here are some of your local consignment stores that are accepting fall clothes now.

If you live in Brookline

Second Time Around – This consignment store is conveniently located right off the Coolidge Corner, Green C-Line stop. It’s smaller so the selection is limited, but the convenient factor is a big plus. Currently, they’re looking for all things leather and statement jackets. So if you got em, take em here. Check out the other locations throughout Boston posted on their website.

Redress Boston– Located on Washington Street in Brookline, this consignment store will accept clothes that are in “excellent condition.” If your clothes sell, you’ll receive a whopping 40% of the selling price. It’s worth the effort but make sure to give them a call or send an email to ensure you’ve got what they’re looking for.

If you live Downtown –

The Closet – Next time you find yourself shopping on Newbury Street, make sure you stop in at The Closet. The consignment store seems to lean more towards high end items and accepts designer clothing for both men and women. They offer a 50/50 split (great deal) and are accepting seasonal items that are less than 2 years old. But you must call for an appointment.

If you live in Allston/Brighton –

Buffalo Exchange – this place is well-known among Boston college students making it great place to trade in clothes for cash. The store describes itself as more “fashionable” and trendy than your typical consignment stores. Check it out but give them a call first to ensure your clothes fit the bill.

If you live near Kendall Square/MIT

The Garment District – This consignment store has everything from back-to-school clothes, to costumes and vintage accessories. Currently, they’re looking for your “shoes, shorts and hats.” They also want “boots, jean jackets, vests, flannels, sports jerseys, and accessories, including suspenders, gloves, belts, wallets, shawls, bow ties, & handbags.” That’s a lot of options that I’m sure you have hanging in your closet somewhere.
