Ask anyone in Massachusetts what the official sandwich is and they’re sure to tell you – the fluffernutter.

But they’d be wrong. Believe it or not – as unique and deserving as this Somerville-born sandwich is, it’s not officially our state sandwich. At least, not yet. But according to a recent report on Masslive.com, “a bill that would make the fluffernutter Massachusetts’ official sandwich has been given the initial approval by state lawmakers.”

The article reported that “The bill still needs another vote of the House before going to the Senate” after being advanced by a voice vote yesterday “during an informal session of the House of Representatives.”

If you’re unfamiliar with the fluffernutter sandwich, it’s time to get acquainted. The sandwich contains three of my favorite things – peanut butter, marshmallow fluff and bread. It’s delicious and considered especially popular in New England.

This could have something to do with the fact that marshmallow fluff was invented in Somerville, MA in 1917. According to the article, the spread contains “corn syrup, sugar syrup, dried egg whites and artificial vanilla flavoring.” That’s all it took to start a sandwich revolution – in New England, anyway.

We’ll have to wait and see whether the fluffernutter is dubbed the official sandwich of Massachusetts. For now, it’ll just have to settle for our official lunchtime snack.
