Sure, nail art may be the beauty trend that grabs the attention, but all you have to do is look down at your chipped polish to see that it’s getting old. The beauty trend with real staying power? Lipstick.

The Huffington Post reports that more women than ever bought lip products in 2013 (I know I probably hauled in more than my fair share). So when Laura Weinstein, the vice president of marketing for the brands Sally Hansen and NYC New York Color declares, “Lip really is the new nail,” I’m inclined to believe her.

If our lips are about to get hit with the same level of attention that our nails got in the last couple years, who knows what’s in store. Colors we’ve never tried before? Stick-on prints? Glitter overlays? For me, it might just be the year I try orange. Or purple. Or even black if I’m feeling really adventurous.
