The Big One

A breakdown on the day’s biggest Inno story.

Lucy: The latest regulatory filing for CyPhy Works, a Danvers, Mass.-based drone company founded in late 2008, brought into view two pieces of news.

The company raised over $4.5M in a debt offering, according to the Form D filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission on June 13.

But a closer analysis revealed that the name of Helen Greiner, the robotics visionary who started CyPhy Works ten years ago and later switched to the role of CTO, was not included in the “related persons” section of the form.

Today, CyPhy Works confirmed that Greiner left the company in late 2017.

“Helen Greiner decided to leave CyPhy Works and exit from the Board of Directors in late 2017 in order to work with the Army in an effort to support a broader mission,” a CyPhy spokesperson wrote in an email. “CyPhy Works remains committed to delivering tethered UAVs to the defense, government and commercial markets.”

Making Moves

Inside the people, companies and organizations making moves in Boston.

Sri: Stryker is NOT acquiring Boston Scientific. Two days after news reports claimed Michigan-based medical tech company Stryker was in talks to acquire Marlborough, Mass.-based Boston Scientific, Stryker said that it is not in talks with the medical device manufacturer about a takeover.

Lucy: After yesterday’s story about HelloFriend, here’s another local social media startup that wants to build an alternative to FacebookPost With Me is a social network specifically designed to be unlike some of the world’s most popular. The site was created to give people a sense of community and civility that co-founders Richard DiBona and Kara Peterson, a husband-and-wife team, feel most social media platforms have abandoned. Users can create posts with photos and text on any topic they want, from sports to travel. Read more: Boston-Based Post With Me Looks to Bring Civility to Social Media

Sri: SaaS-based managed services technology platform Continuum acquired cybersecurity firm CARVIR. The move extends Continuum’s cybersecurity offerings and ability to enable IT service providers to meet the mounting security and compliance needs of their SMB clients.

Lucy: Cambridge-based CareAcademy, which teaches online classes to help caregivers provide care at home, was selected as one of “The Backstage 100,” 100 startups led by underrepresented founders that will receive an investment from Backstage Capital.

New Money

Your daily funding roundup.

Sri: It’s not a startup this time — Boston-based VC firm, Romulus Capital raised $83M for its third funding round. Romulus focuses on early-stage tech firms.

Player Personnel

Who’s moving where.

Sri: HubSpot has an Akamai chief. Cambridge-based software firm HubSpot tapped Akamai’s SVP of business finance and operations, Kate Bueker as its new CFO. Bueker has been at Akamai for 11 years and was previously an investment banker at The Blackstone GroupUBS and Credit Suisse.

Lucy: Josh Verrill joined the NuoDB team in Cambridge as their new CMO. Prior to joining NuoDB, he spent five years at Dyn (acquired by Oracle) in Manchester, NH.

Insight and analysis from the community and beyond.

Lucy: What is the most effective way to submit a proposal to get funding from established venture capital groups? Jeff Bussgang, VC at Flybridge Capital, answered on Quora“Investors will drop anything to take a meeting with, or seriously consider evaluating, an entrepreneur recommended by someone who previously made them money.”

Mea Culpa

Because sometimes we make mistakes.

Sri: The blurb on New England tech salaries yesterday may have implied that the state’s average salary is $75,297. That number is the Median Household Income for Massachusetts, NOT the average salary of an individual.
