Fox officially confirmed a reboot of the popular series 24 starring Kiefer Sutherland in a limited series. Sutherland is set to kick ass again and reprise protagonist Jack Bauer next year in the 12-episode series. That’s right, 12 episodes for a series titled 24 in which each episode was supposed to represent an hour of the day. So yeah, we’re apparently only looking at half a day’s work here but that’s okay.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, 24: Live Another Day will be produced by Homeland showrunner Howard Gordon. The show’s revival is said to come on the heels of a botched attempted to bring 24 to the big screen. After years of numerous attempts, of which Southerland was fully committed, 20th Century Fox and Imagine TV were unable to agree on a budget for the intended flick.

Fox chairman Kevin Reilly told reporters during an early conference call of the revamped miniseries, “It’s something that I think if it doesn’t happen, I will not be heartbroken. I’m very proud of that run and how it ended. It was very hard to get it to the finish line with some kind of grace in closure. Why mess it up? But if you find the right story…”

Not quite the confidence boost I’m sure the studio, producers, and fans at large were hoping for. In fact, it almost sounds as if Reilly doesn’t think the series will carry the clout or swagger it did during its 192 episode run from 2001-2010. So, why bother?

Well, according to an editorial by BuzzFeed, “With American Idol sinking like a stone, Fox needs new hits. Other than The Following, the network didn’t have any successes this season — yes, The Mindy Project got renewed, but its ratings are relatively low.”

So what do you fans think of the upcoming 12, err, 24? Do you think Jack Bauer can save the world in only half a day? Will the miniseries spawn a new spinoff or complete revival of the once-popular drama show? Let us know all your thoughts in the comments section below.
