For the first time in a decade, Gillette is releasing a brand new design for its line of women’s razors. The Venus Swirl, a razor handle that is outfitted with a metal ball to act like a rotating hinge for the razor, will hit shelves on January 19. This is the first major change to the Venus design since the line debuted in 2001.

And in order to make sure that the new razor was perfect, Venus did some extensive testing on the Swirl. According to the Boston Globe, the Swirl that you’ll see on shelves is a product five years in the making. And, during those years, they’ve gone to great lengths to ensure that women using the razor are getting the best shave possible. Those measures include dozens of prototypes, in-shower observations and testing the razor on 7,000 legs, per the Globe‘s report. After all, what’s a better way to test a razor than to watch women shaving in their natural habitat? (Minus the fact that they were all wearing bathing suits, of course.)

The final product is a razor that allows a closer shave by rotating on a ball hinge in order to contour to the user’s skin. The blades of the Swirl, developed here at Gillette’s headquarters in Boston, are thinner, and the cartridges are outfitted with a comb that’s meant to angle the hairs for shaving.

The Venus Swirl is designated as the women’s razor comparable to the men’s Fusion ProGlide Flexball, which also has a rotating head. The women’s razor retails for $12.59, with the blade cartridges selling at $20.99 for a four-pack. The men’s razor retails at $11.49.
