Unfortunately going green in the Event Planning industry can be difficult. Often the quickest, easiest, and cheapest options are also hard on the environment. While you may not be able to green every aspect of your next event here are a few ideas to get you started.

Location. Try to pick a location that is easy to find and convenient for majority of your

guests. Keeping travel time down will greatly reduce your events carbon footprint. If your event involves more than one location arrange transportation (buses, carpools, maps/walking guides, etc.) for your guests.

Choosing a venue that is well maintained with environmentally friendly amenities (renewable products, high performance windows, water saving appliances, CFL light bulbs, etc.) is an easy way to green your event! The Lenox Hotel was just named the top green hotel in Boston! Here’s a list of other green venues in the city.

Invitations. In today’s electronic world an evite or social media post is often completely appropriate; however, some events still call for formal invitations.  In those cases think about the size (the smaller the better), the paper (made from recycled materials), and the packaging (avoid unnecessary paper and wrapping). Contact green printers for a list of services.

Materials & Decorations. The best materials & decorations are the ones you will use again. Not only are they green, but also cost effective in the long run. This includes ‘real’ dishes, utensils and cloth napkins. If you don’t already have these items in stock, a rental company can supply your needs – look here and here to get to started.

Recycled or homemade decorations are a great way to add something special to your event! Instead of wasting money on cheap, plastic novelty items that will end up in the dumpster, get creative! Search thrift stores and flea markets for unique pieces that will make a statement – look here, here, and here for inspiration!

If your event involves a program or handouts consider the technology available in the venue. Posting the schedule on screens in common areas will save paper and allows you to easily make edits and updates. If this is not possible, again consider the size (the smaller the better), the paper (made from recycled materials), and the packaging (avoid unnecessary paper and wrapping).

Food. The most important thing to consider when selecting your menu is what’s local and

what‘s in season. When you select items that are local you drastically reduce travel time and therefore your carbon footprint. If you’re serving hors d’oeuvres select items that don’t require plates and/or utensils – think legit finger foods. If you are providing lunch a buffet will result in less food and packing waste than box lunches. And if you are working with a caterer try to find one that will donate the left overs to a local shelter.

Recycle. The most obvious way to green your event is to have clearly labeled trashcans and recycling bins throughout the venue.

Hitting all these points at your next event may not be realistic, but one or two is! Your guests (or your client) will notice and appreciate your efforts.
