Ever wonder what would happen if Raging Bull‘s Jake LaMotta went head-to-head with Rocky‘s, well, Rocky? We may finally see an answer to that age-old question, one that has plagued the minds of sports junkies and boxing pundits for decades.

Cue Grudge Match starring Robert De Niro and Sylvester Stallone. You can watch the trailer below.

The film, due out on Christmas of this year, stars the two boxing-movie-veterans as “A pair of aging boxing rivals [who] are coaxed out of retirement to fight one final bout — 30 years after their last match,” says movie aggregator site IMDB’s synopsis.

But De Niro and Stallone aren’t the only A-listers to grace the cast of this athletic comedy. Also included is Academy Award winner Alan Arkin (Little Miss Sunshine), Academy Award winner Kim Bassinger (L.A. Confidential), Kevin Hart, and Jon Bernthal. Peter Segal is signed on as the director and while his string of comedic hits is rather nonexistent, he did helm the cult classic Tommy Boy starring the late great Chris Farley.

Pulling the weight of the movie, though, will be its trifecta of battle-tested directors headed by Doug Ellin (Entourage creator, writer) Tim Kelleher (In Living Color) and Rodney Rothman (Late Show with David Letterman).

I’m certainly curious to see how this movie fares both critically and with the fans. Two-time Oscar winner De Niro (The Godfather: Part II, Raging Bull) has headlined a bevy of box office bombs, save for the recent Silver Linings Playbook, and while he’s likely content pulling down millions in his old age, those bombs are tainting his storied career.

The same goes for Stallone, who wrote the screenplay for Rocky which one Best Picture in 1976, who’s been a staple in the action genre for the majority of his career with a few acclaimed like Rocky sprinkled in. Though Rocky aficionados will surely appreciate the meat locker joke scene with Stallone and Arkin.
