Forget your Halloween costume. The real question is: What is your pet wearing this Halloween?

Don’t deny it – we know that you can’t wait to dress Fluffy in whatever adorable mini witch hat you can find. And how do we know this? Because Americans are expected to spend a whopping $350 million on pet costumes this Halloween.

And as you can see from the graph (below), pet costume spending grew 59 percent between 2010 and 2014, while human Halloween costume spending only grew by 33 percent. That means we’re becoming less concerned with our own costume and more concerned with transforming Fluffy into the Wicked Witch of the West.

Still, the NRF (National Retail Federation) reports that Americans are expected to spend $1.4 billion on their own Halloween costumes – a bit more than the expected expenditure on children’s costumes (around $1 billion). I think we can safely say that Halloween has become an adult holiday. Sorry kids.

And we adults love our pets. We love them so much that we plan to strip them of all dignity, turning them into oh-so-cute pumpkins this October 31 – which the NRF also reports is the top pet costume of 2014, followed by hot dogs and bumblebees.

Below, we’ve rounded up a few of this year’s top pet costumes, which you’re sure to see out-and-about this Halloween, as well as a few of our own favorites for inspiration. And don’t forget – this year’s Halloween Pet Parade takes place in Faneuil Hall on Saturday, October 25. Come prepared!
