Did you know Dunkin’ Donuts sells 5.3 million donuts and munchkins in any given day!? And today the company, which just recently filed for its IPO and was named the 4th most powerful brand in New England, will for sure be baking more.

National Donut Day is known more fondly to Dunkin’ Donuts loyals as Free Donut Day, where participating locations will offer you a free donut of your choice with any beverage purchase. This year Dunkin’ Donuts is adding to the buzz and freebees by launching a corresponding Twitter campaign.

On Twitter, you can win one of several free $50 Dunkin’ Donuts gift cards for answering trivia questions. The company is looking to find, engage and reward true Dunkin’ loyals and donut lovers, with these trivia questions focused on innovative donut varieties across the world (have you heard of the pork and seaweed version in Asia?).

Followers of @DunkinDonuts who offer correct answers using the hashtag #DDonut will be eligible to win the free gift cards. Six questions will be asked throughout the day, with one $50 Dunkin’ Donuts Card awarded per question to an eligible contestant (they will be selected randomly). Keeping with the social media theme, Dunkin’ has also created an event page on Facebook to help get the word out. It already has over 6,500 people attending, who have invited over 12,000 others (those people are still “awaiting reply”).

As for the history of National Donut Day, it was originally established in 1938 by the Chicago Salvation Army. At the time, the organization wanted to honor women who served donuts to soldiers during WWI. Held every first Friday of June since then, the idea now according to John Costello, Chief Global Marketing & Innovation Officer at Dunkin’ Donuts is to, “recognize the happiness donuts bring to people’s lives year-round.”

Let us know if you score one of those gift cards!
