Last year Cambridge-based Greentech Media was chosen as an Official Honoree in the 2010 Webby Awards under the Green category. Today the company is taking their design savvy mobile, releasing a slick iPhone app that enables you to truly enjoy your green tech news on the go.

The company is capitalizing on the growing consumer preference to access news from phones – be it on the go around town or on the couch. In March, Pew Research Center conducted a survey that revealed that over a quarter of Americans read news from their phones. And a more recent survey in December of 300,000 mobile phone subscribers conducted by Handmark showed mobile pulling away from web browsers in terms of consumption preference. More than 30 percent of respondents indicated mobile as the “most important medium” to access breaking news, followed by desktop browsers at 29 percent and TV at 21 percent. And the growth isn’t about to plateau: over half of the respondents noted they plan to access news from their phones more frequently in 2011.

Greentech Media launched in 2007 with the vision of creating an online-media company focused on the growing global green tech market. The site features breaking news, in-depth market research, and focused industry events around everything from enterprise greentech and solar to the smart grid and greentech policy.

With the exception of a dedicated events section, Greentech Media’s iPhone app offers all the content their website offers, organized by greentech niche. The app loads quickly and includes all the great images their original reporting includes online. For the participatory news consumer, the app alllows you to post and read comments on every article. It also enables you to share articles to Twitter, Facebook and over email with a simple click.

While a scaled version of the app can be viewed on the iPad, the company says an iPad optimized app is also on the way as well as one for Android.

Greentech Media received a $1M series soon after launching in 2007 from Lightspeed Venture Partners, Northport Private Equity, and King Hill Capital. A Series B of $2.75M from these VCs came a year later (also including investment from Egora Holding and the Mass. Green Energy Fund), and most recently raised $825k in August, 2009.

While founded here in Massachusetts, this media company has expanded their offices into three other cities (New York, San Francisco and Munich). Compete shows this niche media outlet enjoys over 60k uniques a month from across the globe, and CEO Scott Clavenna clarifies that they currently have 175k uniques a month with over 600k pageviews. The company has had their work featured in prominent publications like The Economist, Fortune, and the Wall Street Journal.
