Kenmore Square’s Hotel Commonwealth may be getting a facelift.

The BBJ reports that the owner of Hotel Commonwealth has filed a 133,400-square-foot expansion plan, to be developed on the property’s parking lot. If the plan gets approval, the amount of rooms in the building will increase 63 percent — approximately 94 rooms. Currently, the building has 149.

The 23,000-square-foot rear-lot is near a Newbury Street extension, running between the Hotel Commonwealth and Massachusetts Turnpike, across from Fenway Park.

No additional height will be added to the five-story structure if, and when, the extension is built.

Last year, Boston University sold the building to Sage Hospitality for a reported $76.5 million.

Pedestrian improvements, including new sidewalks, lighting, and street signs will, reportedly, provide a “boost” to underutilized areas.

In addition to the Hotel Commonwealth proposal, the Fenway area will soon be home to a MBTA Yawkey Way Commuter Rail Station, and a planned Fenway Center, which is set to bring a four buildings — including a 22-story residential and office tower — and additional parking along the Massachusetts Turnpike overpass.

On Monday, Samuels and Associates filed plans for a $500 million Landmark Center expansion.
