Following up to our feature interview around how to get a job at Mashable, this week we’re doing the same with one of Boston’s fastest growing startups, SCVNGR. SCVNGR is founded and led by 21-year old Seth Priebatsch, who is interested in performance over experience. The company is on many college students’ lists for internships and jobs. We spoke with SCVNGR’s Chief Guru and Recruiter, Nick Herbold, to get tips on how to get a job at SCVNGR:

What is core to building SCVNGR’s team?

We look to build our team with exceptional people. We hire people, not positions with the knowledge that these individuals will use their talents, experience and motivation to win. As a result – it’s my responsibilities to learn about and meet the exceptional people of the world who work well on a team and will inspire us as well will them to become even better.

While we are looking for exceptional people, the person must be driven ever to excel and work well in a team environment. If you’re a lone cowboy, you’re not going to work well in our team of rockstars. That’s true on both the sales and engineering fronts, our company is incredibly collaborative and strives to win.

Is there a “normal” hiring process?

SCVNGR does have a hiring process, although to label it “normal” might not be the best descriptor. We’ve designed situations that allow a candidate to demonstrate their abilities. The more standard question/answer interview style can be tremendously revealing to a trained recruiter and complementing it with these situations serves us well. Through this process we learn about the candidates natural abilities, adaptability under pressure and how they fit into our company’s culture.

What are some unique ways SCVNGR vets candidates?

Our company culture is quite important. When you’re “living” with a group of people (a startup’s long hours paired with never really shutting off) it’s important that they match your intensity and inspire you to grow each day.

Recently, we’ve instituted a social interview as part of our early interview process. It’s a fantastic opportunity for candidates to meet the members of our team, learn more about the company for many of us to meet them. It’s an informal setting, which allows us to get to know candidates on a more personal level and has been tremendously beneficial.

How important are age and experience?

Our primary goal is to bring on exceptional people who will grow this company. Exceptional people are all types of ages, so it’s important as a startup for the individual to be at a point in their lives where they are dedicated to pouring themselves into this venture. The commitment required at a startup is not for everyone and that’s okay, it just doesn’t make sense for those folks to work at one.

Regarding experience – it depends on the particular situation. Experience is valuable because it saves time you might waste learning something. That said, we also value potential. We’re willing to teach people a function because we know they will bring it to another level.

What tip would you offer to people looking to get an internship or job at SCVNGR?

I advise taking time to study our company and yourself – what we do and who we are and what you bring to the table. Too many times, candidate will fall in love with SCVNGR but fail to convey what they’d contribute to our team. During the interview process have fun and let us know who you are.
