There are fewer things I love more than the twinkling lights, cheery music and seasonal fare that comes along with the holiday season. But – as someone who travels every Christmas – there are fewer things I love less than forking over hundreds of dollars for an airplane ticket during the November and December months.

Like myself, many of you will also be flying somewhere this holiday season – and would like to do so without depleting your savings. Trust me, I understand.

Thankfully, a new survey is here to help. CNN reported this week that if you’re looking to purchase the cheapest flight for a holiday vacation, now is the time to do so. According to the article, the lowest prices for domestic airfares happen to be about eight weeks before the departure date, coming in about “19 percent below the average fare of $496,” reports the travel industry research group, Airlines Reporting Corporation.

While last Sunday, October 26, was technically the cheapest day to score a holiday flight (given that it was the nine week mark until Christmas week), it’s still not too late. The article reports that overall, Sundays are generally the cheapest days to buy plane tickets.

Whatever you do, don’t hold off on purchasing your flight until the next weekday. According to the report, Mondays are actually the most expensive days to purchase a domestic flight, $71 more expensive than on a Sunday – to be exact.

Another trick to scoring cheaper airfare (if you’re willing) is to fly on the actual holidays, themselves. According to the article, flying late Christmas Eve, on Christmas Day or on January 1 are the cheapest days to fly during the holiday season.

Either way, we recommend figuring out your flight quickly. Especially given that scoring a deal this holiday season could be harder than ever before, according to Keith Nowak of Travelocity. To see more tips on securing a cheaper flight this season, check out the rest of the CNN article here.
