Graduate school can be overwhelming when projects, papers, and presentations pile up. How do students cope with the workload and thrive in their learning environment?

At Hult International Business School’s Boston campus, The Learning Resource Center provides online resources, workshops, and tutoring sessions to support an array of students’ needs. Tina Finnegan, Boston’s Learning Resource Manager, explained that students “can pop in with any question from semicolons to citations!”

Finnegan went on to provide helpful insider tips to ensure that students make the most of their graduate year:

  1. Plan ahead: iCal, Google Cal, DayMinder, Action Day – whatever floats your boat – make sure you have it ready at your disposal. The key to success in graduate programs, designed to challenge your intellect and put your time management skills to the test, is to build awareness of what needs to be accomplished and prioritize. Never try to tackle everything at once. Break tasks, assignments, and errands down, and spread them throughout your weeks; use To-Do lists and planners to help you meet these feats.

  2. Never underestimate the value of a class syllabus. Most students avoid course outlines because they think they are useless: nothing but deadlines. Au contraire – consider the syllabus your road map to a course. Not only does it provide important due dates, but it often delineates detailed expectations for class participation, assignment formats, and grade rubrics as well as useful resources for you to take advantage: office hours, online materials, recommended vs. required texts. When in doubt, refer to the syllabus, and then follow up with faculty or Teaching Assistants if questions remain.

  3. Ask questions. Graduate school anticipates you are a seasoned student, so do what students are meant to do best: ask questions, request referrals, follow up on any confusion you experience. Your graduate program will help you master the content of your desired field and help you step into the future of your professional success through the resource network it provides you. Many graduate schools are equipped with academic resource and advising centers to support you along the way: just remember to ask!
