To hike (verb): the act of breathing fresh air and exploring awe-inspiring scenery, all while burning a huge amount of calories. Some of the best places to break out that walking stick? Canyon Ranch’s all-inclusive resorts in Tucson, AZ, and Lenox, MA. But before you set out on your next wilderness adventure, check out our list of trekking necessities.

What to wear: Be prepared for anything. Start with thin, removable layers like a T-shirt and windbreaker. Then throw a sweatshirt, rain poncho, and hat into your backpack in case the weather takes a turn. As for boots? Lace up a sturdy pair and break them in before heading out.

What to pack: Hydration is key. Carry 1/2 to 1 quart of water for every hour you plan on hiking and make sure to have plenty of salty snacks on hand (trail mix, I’m looking at you). Lastly, put together a mini first-aid kit complete with lip balm, sunscreen, and Band-Aids. Oh, and a map! Don’t forget the map.

Interested in visiting Canyon Ranch? With guide-led group outings, night-vision experiences, and even paint-while-you-hike lessons, there’s something for every trail blazer.
