Day by day the Apple iOS 7 release date creeps closer but today, Apple has announced a new iMessage spam reporting system. Apparently users are fed up with receiving spam messages that promise alluring prescriptions, discounts, enhancements, and pure lies and why not? It’s called spam for a reason and now Apple wants you to tell them about it so that they can do, well, something. Hopefully.

Nobody knows exactly what Tim Cook and this cronies are planning to do about spam messages but at least they’ve put some kind of system in place. From Apple’s support site:

Messages: Reporting unwanted messages sent from iMessage

If you’re seeing unwanted iMessages (spam) in Messages app, you can report those to Apple.

To report unwanted iMessage messages to Apple, please send an email with the following details to: imessage.spam@icloud.com

  1. Include a screenshot of the message you have received.
  2. Include the full email address or phone number you received the unwanted message from.
  3. Include the date and time that you received the message.

To take a screenshot:

  • To take a screenshot on your iOS device, press and release the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time. The screenshot is added to your Camera Roll album.
  • To take a screenshot in OS X, simultaneously press the Command + Shift and the number 3 key on your keyboard. The screenshot is saved to your Desktop folder.
To learn more about taking screenshots in OS X, see article HT5775.

Though spam messages in iMessage aren’t quite the nuisance as, say, those in your Yahoo junk mail inbox, enough iOS and OS X users have complained to prompt the Cupertino executives to act. Though there’s been no mention of what they plan on doing upon receiving the applicable information from users, at least it seems like they’re taking action.

For those who try out the new system, let us know how it goes.
