UPDATE: Check out all the new features for iOS 7, release date, and specs here

Today marks the beginning of Apple’s annual WWDC where finally loyalists and enthusiastic users are expected to witness the debut of iOS 7, the next-generation mobile operating system for Apple devices. iOS 7 release date and specs have long since been stuck in the rumor mill, producing gossip ranging from user interface to whether or not the OS would even ship in time for today. With WWDC expected to kick off this afternoon, here’s what you can expect from iOS 7.

The flagship OS for Apple’s mobile devices is alleged to boast some major design overhauls. Most notably, the UI for iOS 7 is suggested to be much “flatter,” meaning it won’t possess the glossy, 3-D type icons and interfaces made popular by all Apple gadgets past. While its true that Steve Jobs himself championed the skeumorphism of iOS, his hand-picked design guru Jony Ive opted to take Apple in a new directions.

For stock app icons like Music, Photos, Mail, Safari, Messages, each are all expected to have their own assigned color though all will likely have some kind of black or white base. Similarly, we’re thought to see a texture-less default background though Apple users should look for a panoramic-type wallpaper that pans as the home screen is swiped. Similarly, Game Center could be stripped of green felt and Newsstand tweaked to remove the wood-shelf interface.

Apple fan site MacRumors posted a concept photo of what they think iOS 7 will look like, taking into account more rumors and speculation including the

“Carrier signal in status bar changed to five white/gray dots instead of bars… Walking directions in Maps… ‘Share’ menu now scrolls sideways with one row dedicated to AirDrop sharing to other devices and a second row dedicated to services such as Facebook, Twitter, and the rumored Flickr and Vimeo integration. A third row supports system functions like print, copy, and “use as wallpaper”.

Apple rarely allows for anyone to get a glimpse at its products prior to their release so its important to note that nothing has been confirmed or denied by Apple at this point. Many of the rumors have been conceived by supply chain sources or third-party security analysts so their validity is likely though unofficial.

The keynote session of WWDC is slated to kick off today at 10am PT, 1pm ET in San Francisco at the Moscone Center. Be sure to check out BostInno for the latest Apple coverage.
