As mobile Apple users wait for the iPad mini with great anticipation, it’s being reported this morning that the next-generation iPad mini with Retina display will see constrained shipments. In other words, Apple won’t be rolling out enough iPad minis with the company’s signature high-resolution display to appease the masses come the rumored October 15 release event. The iPad mini could ship with full inventory as late as next year.

According to Reuters“Apple’s supply chain is only now gearing up to make retina displays for the iPad Mini, which means the gadgets could be available in only limited quantities this year, if at all.”

It had been rumored for quite some time that Apple was facing difficulties in incorporating the Retina display in the 7.9-inch miniature slate and this seems to be all but the confirmation we’ve been waiting for.

The Retina display has come to be a staple in Apple’s mobile product line, being carried by the likes of the popular iPad and iPhone, so it’s only natural Tim Cook and company would try to do the same for the iPad mini.

Only there’s a problem. And if Frank Gillett, an analyst with Forrester is correct, “If they don’t put in retina … there will be howls.”

It’s thought that the difference in size between the flagship iPad and the iPad mini poses an issue in terms of pixels and aspect ratio. With Apple’s attempt at an iPad mini with Retina display, the Cupertino electronics conglomerate needs to figure away to pack 3.1 million pixels into a display roughly 2-inches smaller than it’s used to.

The Retina display also saps up battery life the way the BostInno office does beers on a Friday afternoon, so looking to equip the device with an adequate battery size could be a source of trouble for Apple.

Other specs and photos concerning the iPad mini have been scarce but Apple Insider notes the the company may consider lowering'”on-board storage to 8GB and sticking with existing internals.”
