As we inch closer to Apple’s WWDC in June and the iPhone 5S release date, it seems almost daily there are iPhone 5S rumors and leaks abound that pique the interest of even loyalest of the Android faithful. The latest, however, could be a game-changer for the flagship smartphone that, while impressive in comparison to rival electronics producers, proved to be rather unexceptional as far as Apple devices are concerned. According to multiple sources concerning the iPhone 5S, Apple will reportedly double its display to 1.5 million pixels.

A report by the Chinese leak site Weiphone claims inside sources have relayed to them that the new display will pack 1.5 million pixels into the 4-inch Retina display. To put it in perspective, the current iPhone 5 model only boasts 730,000 pixels.

The same report mentions that the iPhone 5 will have an even thinner bezel than its current design which suggests that the screen will not be increased in order to accommodate the additional pixels.

Oddly enough, though, nobody seems to be buying these rumors as they sound just a bit too impractical.Leak site and fan blog, Mac Rumors, found the same report but snuffed out the inconsistencies right away. First it noted that increasing the pixels to 1.5 million without enlarging the display would create severe imperfections,

“One possible method would be to increase the iPhone 5’s pixel density by a factor of 1.5 in each dimension, yielding a 1704 x 960 display which would include 1.6 million pixels at a density of approximately 489 pixels per inch (PPI). Scaling existing content to the higher-density display would, however, be imperfect given the fractional multiplier.”

Tech specs aside, these pieces of display gossip are inconsistent with current buzz that speculates the display will not be overhauled and the next-generation iPhone’s most significant upgrades will not have to do with the screen at all.

This brings up one of the hottest arguments concerning Apple and its flagship handset, which is whether or not Apple will be releasing an iPhone 5S, and iPhone 6, or both and when. Apple has yet to confirm or deny the production of both devices and its been widely assumed with no opposition that the next-generation smartphone will be the 5S, following in the footsteps of the iPhone 4 and 4S. However, during Apple’s quarterly earnings conference call, CEO Tim Cook hinted at an iPhone with a larger display to compete with the likes of Samsung’s Galaxy S4. Such a hint would indicate that Apple has two phones on the drawing board, one of which is sure to be announced at the WWDC in June.

There’s also the report that Apple is already underway with the development of a lower-end iPhone to appeal to the masses who can’t afford a regular iPhone model. There’s been little talk of that device, though its just as likely as an iPhone 5S and/or iPhone 6.

Last week Apple confirmed that its WWDC keynote session will take place on June 10th in San Francisco. Only there and then will we know for sure what Apple has in store. Whichever device is showcased will probably be consumer available in the fall (most are suggesting September). Until then, we can only keep the rumor mill spinning because Apple is notoriously tight-lipped in the weeks leading up to its conferences.

The only thing we know for sure at this point is that Apple will debut its updated mobile operating system, iOS 7, which has been validated by Apple’s own Jony Ive as being less skeumorphic than the Cupertin0-based electronics giant is used to doting on its customers.
