Despite the fact that latest smartphone from Apple, the iPhone 5S, isn’t due out until the fall, rumors are already beginning to surface around an iPhone 6 release. BGR wrote this morning that a cryptic quote from Apple CEO Tim Cook in his quarterly earnings conference call back in March may hint at a new direction for the iPhone in terms of size, while a quote from Jefferies analyst Peter Misek may back it up.

Cook noted during the conference call,

“We always strive to create the very best display. Some customers value large screen size. Others value other factors such as resolution, color quality, white balance, reflectivity, power consumption, compatibility of apps, portability. Our competitors have made some significant tradeoffs in many of these areas to ship a larger display. We would not ship a larger display iPhone while these tradeoffs exist.”

Cook’s message can be deciphered in multiple ways. He can either mean that Apple is unwilling to compete with other smartphone manufacturers in terms of screen size, that Apple is feels a bigger screen size will compromise the quality of its mobile technology, or that Apple refuses to definitively state that it’ll mass produce a larger iPhone until they’ve perfected it.

Seeing as how the iPhone 5S won’t be ready until near the end of this year, Cook may be trying to put up smokescreen to divert attention from future projects to the ones that aren’t so far off. After all, why would he try to sell one product when he has another already on the burner?

No matter the intent of Cook’s message, the Financial Times reports that Jefferies Analyst Peter Misek suggests that  “Apple Inc. will likely launch a larger screen iPhone 6 in June 2014.”

Its likely that after Cook’s message and Misek’s quote that as far as an iPhone 6 is concerned, mum’s the word. In all likelihood Cook doesn’t want to jeopardize the potential to sell the iPhone 5S by having buyers and users wait it out until an iPhone 6.

As for the iPhone 5S, there’s nothing new in terms of leaked photos or specs. Be sure to check back with BostInno for the latest updates on all things Apple.
