Jay-Z dabbles in everything. From rapping to producing, marketing to stadium building, the man has his hand in everything. Not to be excluded, of course, is the soundtrack to the much-anticipated remake of ‘The Great Gatsby’ starring Leonardo DiCaprio which premiers next Friday, May 10. NPR has been releasing songs from the soundtrack all week and as it features so many big names, we’d be surprised if Jay (Z, not Gatsby that is) didn’t make the cut.

The song opens with a quote from Leo’s character saying “My life has got to be like this. It’s got to keep going up,” a notion I’m sure Jay-Z can relate to. Containing mash-ups of more quotes from the flick like “Her voice is full of money” with references to Mark Twain, the Sept. 11 terror attacks, heroin, Colin Powell and of course the kingpin himself, Jay-Z.

Other big names headlining the soundtrack are Ms. Jay-Z (Beyoncé) in a duet with André 3000, will.i.am., Jack White, and Florence + The Machine.

The Great Gatsby is based off the book of the same title by F. Scott Fitzgerald and is not only considered the quintessential Jazz-age novel but also one of the greatest pieces of American literature of all time. The original 1974 film, starring Robert Redford, won two Academy Awards but doesn’t do justice to the novel. Movie aggregator website IMDB gives the original a mere 6.2 stars out of 10, hardly worthy of a novel of such a caliber in the American canon. Similar to IMDB, Rotten Tomatoes gives the original ‘Gatsby’ a 34% approval rating.

According to the Huffington Post, Jay-Z  not only submitted a track for the movie, but he “produced the ‘Great Gatsby’ soundtrack, which is one of the upcoming film’s biggest trendy selling points.”

The complete soundtrack will be available on May 7, while the movie will make its debut on May 10.
