Red Sox owner John Henry, who recently purchased the Boston Globe, has tapped a new publisher: himself.

That’s right, Henry, who officially purchased the Globe – and its affiliates – in late October for $70 million, has named himself the paper’s publisher.

“My main role as publisher is to ensure that the Globe has the right management and that management has the resources to accomplish its mission,” Henry told himself. Kidding. (According to Boston.com.)

He also tapped Mike Sheehan, treasurer of One Fund Boston, as new CEO of the paper, Boston.com reports.

“I wanted to leverage what I had learned over 30 years in the advertising business and apply it in a different way,’’ Sheehan told Boston.com. “It’s an incredible opportunity. There isn’t another media property in New England that offers the readership or the viewership of the Globe.’’

Last week, Sheehan retired as chairman of Hill Holliday, after stepping down as the company’s CEO last May.

The NYT Co. bought the Globe in 1993 for $1.1 billion. The printing industry’s struggles eventually forced the the NYT to cut costs, making the Globe expendable.

The NYT agreed to sell the Globe to Henry last August.
