Secretary of State John Kerry will participate in a Google+ Hangout on Tuesday, September 10, to discuss the escalating crisis in Syria. Entitled “Syria: Weighing the U.S. Response” the Hangout will be hosted by New York Times columnist Nicholas Kristof and founder of digital news site Syria Deeply Lara Setrakian, and take place at 2pm ET.

According to the press release issued by the State Department, “This roundtable discussion will focus on President Obama’s decision to seek congressional approval for a limited military strike to deter and degrade Syria’s use of chemical weapons, and Secretary Kerry will have an opportunity to answer questions submitted by online viewers.”

It will also seek to explain in greater detail to those less informed what exactly is happening in Syria and who the Syrian rebels really are.

Most recently, Secretary Kerry mentioned in a press conference from London that in order for President Bashar al-Assad to avoid any U.S. intervention in his country’s civil war, Assad must submit all of his chemical weapons to the control of the international community. After his advisors backtracked on the statements saying Kerry went off script, Russia voiced an ambiguous resolution that is thought to help bridge peace between with the U.S. and Syria, as well as its allies in the region, though few details have been disclosed on the matter.

Congress has reconvened and is back in session today. The bicameral legislature will debate a U.S. military intervention in the next couple of days, whereupon the Senate has announced it will put the Senate Foreign Relations Committee’s own resolution to a vote on Wednesday. President Obama is expected to face a tougher challenge in trying to convince the Republican-controlled House of Representatives to allow for some kind of aid.

President Bashar al-Assad sat down for an interview with Charlie Rose, which will air tonight at 9pm ET on PBS, during which he bluntly denied his administration’s use of sarin nerve gas on unarmed civilians in the Damascus suburbs on August 21.

Kerry’s Google+ Hangout tomorrow will take place at 9pm ET and can be viewed on Google+ here and from the State Department’s website here.
