He’s dark. He’s handsome. And he just signed on to play Boston’s notorious gangster, James Whitey Bulger.

The NY Daily News reports that Actor Johnny Depp has “made a deal to star in ‘Black Mass,’” directed by Scott Cooper for Cross Creek Pictures. The film will center around South Boston’s most infamous gangster, James Whitey Bulger, who remarkably escaped capture for over 16 years. And will “tell the true story of Bulger… who became one of the FBI’s 10 Most Wanted fugitives.”

This isn’t Johnny Depp’s first criminal-playing rodeo, however. In 2009, the talented actor played John Dillinger in the film “Public Enemies.”

But Johnny Depp may not be the only actor playing Whitey Bulger in the future. Apparently, Ben Affleck also wants to tell the Whitey Bulger tale in his own film.

It’s been reported that Affleck plans to direct “his own Whitey Bulger project…scripted by Boardwalk Empire creator Terence Winter” with Matt Damon expected to play Whitey Bulger, according to Caught in Southie.

However, LA Magazine also reports that the Boston Natives and actors “scheming to make their own Bulger flick,” have nothing set in stone, yet. In 2011, Deadline reported that Affleck planned “to also co-star along with Damon and his brother Casey Affleck, making it a real Good Will Hunting reunion.” But with all of the rumors flying around, we’ll just have to wait and see what happens with this Bulger project.

And considering Affleck has a list of other projects at the forefront, it looks as though “Black Mass” with Johnny Depp will certainly be hitting theatres first.

So, back to the real question at-hand – who do you think would make a better Whitey Bulgur, anyway? Johnny Depp or Matt Damon? Let us know in the comments below!
