Given that Massachusetts plays such a prominent role in a multitude of industries, it can be difficult to determine which company is the largest employer in the state. Massive corporations call the Bay State home, as do numerous startups and old school businesses. But have you ever wondered which organization holds the most jobs in its hands?

If you’re not counting any government entities, it’s Massachusetts General Hospital. According to a map put together by Business Insider, which notes that the data it pulled from the U.S. Department of Labor excludes military and government positions, MGH is the organization with the most employers in the state.

The map above was put together by Mike Simmons of Broadview Networks, which gathered data from information from CareerOneStop, a database sponsored by the U.S. Department of Labor. Mass General, according to the data, provides 14,000 jobs.

Some states’ major employers make more sense than others. Some jobs are made more abundant by colleges and universities, while others are by major household-name brands. For example, the biggest employer in Florida, Texas and Colorado are the universities of Florida, Texas and Colorado. In Washington, though, it’s Microsoft; in Alaska, it’s the Anchorage Airport.

So what do you think, Bay Staters? Would Mass. entities likes the military and the government have more employees in the state if they were counted? Or does Mass. General reign supreme? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.
