There was Gonk and Wilcock, “Varitek splitting the uprights”, KJ and Hondo, and many others. They’re called Meninoisms, after Boston’s outgoing Mayor Menino, who’s knack for mispronouncing Boston sports names has become as endearing as it’s been prevalent. Now, with the Red Sox on the verge of playing in their third World Series of the last decade, we have another one. Menino, in a press conference earlier today, said that he hoped the Red Sox would win the “World Series Cup”. Though there is no such thing as the World Series Cup, though the Red Sox and their numerous fans around the Hub clearly took from the comment that Menino hopes to see them win the actual World Series.

Here’s a picture from the press conference earlier today:

Red Sox President Larry Luchino was there, and the Mayor did have one serious announcement regarding the World Series:

And he suggested that the city should wear the color red tomorrow in support of the team.

As mentioned, Menino’s history of slightly erring in his sports takes over the years have been well-documented. On top of the Gonk, he referred to Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski as “Grabowski”, and that Bobby Orr’s famous Stanley Cup-clinching goal in 1970 was “ionic”.

He also called NBA commissioner David Stern, “Donald Sterns”. This list goes on and on, and as the Mayor’s final term in office continues to dwindle (it will expire in early January), residents of the city have been wondering if there would be anymore Meninoisms. Today confirmed that, at the very least, there was one more to enjoy.
