Sick of the snow? Yeah, so are we. What is usually an expected – and accepted – part of Boston winter has slowed down and all but consumed our lives. Want to find a cab? Good luck getting off the sidewalk. Want to leave your house? Careful not to slip on the sidewalk you couldn’t salt, because salt has become a rare commodity in the city.
In one word (and understatement), the snow is a pain. But The Lawn on D, which is in the middle of its winter series of events dubbed ‘Winter on D,’ has a plan to help us embrace the white stuff. Not a bad idea, because it’s clearly going to be here for a while.
First it was the Fire & Ice Festival, which featured an ice labrynth (pictured) and fire dancers, then SnowMANia, a snowman building contest on the Lawn, and now, coming up is Slopefest. Slopefest is a three-day winter festival featuring a two-story slope built for snow tubing and a winter sports exhibition.
Bostonians feeling too cooped up are invited to snow tube at the Lawn on D on Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tubes are provided by the Massachusetts Convention Center Authority, but tickets are $5 to guarantee a few turns down the 70-foot hill. The winter sport exhibition will take place on Friday and Saturday night from 6 to 8 p.m., featuring the SnowRiders, a team of professional skiers and snowboarders who will be performing tricks on the slope.
To eat, Roxy’s Grilled Cheese, Bon Me and The Taco Truck will be on site for some winter food truck fare. Finally, top off the weekend events with performances by MetaMovements, who will be hosting a Latin dance party and teaching steps for the crowd to join in and get their blood moving.
Slopefest, which was rescheduled from last weekend due to the latest snow storm, will be the last Winter on D event for the season. If you’ve been a true curmudgeon over the past month of endless snow, now’s your chance to get out and try to make the most of it. Because after all, the mayor did tell us not to jump out of our windows into the snow for fun.
