Legal Sea Foods offshoot, Legal on the Mystic, opened yesterday, September 2, at Somerville’s Assembly Row. This addition is President and CEO Roger Berkowitz’s seventh restaurant brand in the Legal Sea Foods family which includes Legal Sea Foods, Legal Test Kitchen (LTK), Legal C Bar, Legal Harborside, Legal Crossing (LX), and the newly opened Legal Oysteria.

But what differentiates Legal on the Mystic from its other Legal counterparts is an atmosphere which “lends to the location’s industrial past while melding traditional with contemporary,” notes a release. The 7,100 square foot space is made up with steel pipes, metal mesh, steel concrete and brick. And is designed to reflect the “early industrial development” in Assembly Square, according to an official source.

As you can see from the photo (above), the 90-seat bar serves as the main focus of the restaurant. The dining room is also surrounded by large garage doors, which serve as “a nod to the Ford Motor assembly plant for which Assembly Square is named,” notes the release.

The restaurant also has a 36-seat patio overlooking the Mystic River, which – considering the scorching hot temps outside – we’ll hopefully be using for a little bit longer.

Diners can also expect a more casual, social dining experience with plenty of shared plates to go around. Developed by Executive Chef Rich Bellante and Restaurant Chef Shane Queiros, the menu includes salads, pizzas, tacos and more. Some of the menu highlights include: White clam pizza, chopped Greek Salad, Mesquite BBQ ribs and shrimp, and blackened swordfish tacos.

For thirsty patrons, Legal on the Mystic’s bar program features 15 signature cocktails. The craft cocktails fall into one of the four categories including: House Specialties, Sours, Cocktails, and Highballs.

The restaurant is open for lunch and dinner daily (Monday through Saturday from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 a.m. and Sunday from 11:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m.), and is located at 301 Great River Road in Assembly Row, Somerville.
