A new season always gives me wardrobe fatigue. Yes, I’m the person who stands in front of their closet saying over and over: “I’ve got nothing to wear. No really, I have nothing to wear.” But I discovered a simple remedy to combat this desperate state. And one that actually makes me excited to kick off a new season (yes, even a colder one).

My solution? Choose two or three new trends and then purchase one or two items from each. Not only will you be ahead of the curve, but your significant other (or pet) will never hear you utter those dreaded words again. Here’s my take on the top trends this fall.

1. Sneakers. When Karl Lagerfeld sent Cara Delevingne down the Chanel runway in candy-colored tweed sneakers, we knew that a style moment had been born. DKNY, Ralph Lauren, and Marc by Marc Jacobs also showed off fashion sneakers in all kinds of new (and fun) iterations. The message? It’s all about comfort. And the trick to not looking like you just left the gym? Pair them with dressier pieces – think knee-length skirts, slim-fitting pants, or a flirty dress.

2. Knits. After last year’s brutal winter, designers made sure that you’ll stay warm for this one. Stella McCartney, Michael Kors, Calvin Klein, and CÉLINE showed off head-to-toe knits. Lightweight enough to be truly comfy and in muted shades (olive, caramel and salmon), these pieces can take you from the office to a dinner date and beyond.

3. Mod Squad. The 60s definitely ruled the fall runways, but not in a campy way. Instead, designers went for a truly sophisticated mod look: bright cutout dresses at Valentino, sportier plastic and metallic minis at Miu Miu, fuzzy short coats at Dsquared2, and whimsical prints at Matthew Williamson. Keep your hair and makeup simple for an of-the-moment twist.

4. Lipstick Red. It stands out in a crowd, looks good on nearly everyone, and was spotted at all the hottest shows. Lipstick red is the color of the season. Whether on a beautiful lace gown at Reem Acra, a fuzzy robe coat at Moschino, or a military topper at Christian Dior, this vibrant shade stole every show. Start small with a bright red crossbody bag or a pair of scarlet pumps. Oh, and don’t forget to add a red lip. Yes, it’s okay to be matchy-matchy.
